Health officials announced Saturday that a second person has died in connection with the ongoing Legionnaires' disease cluster on Manhattan's Upper East Side. The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene confirmed the fatality, though they did not release the individual's identity or specific details about their age or underlying health conditions.
The outbreak, which has sickened at least a dozen residents in the neighborhood, has prompted an aggressive investigation by city health authorities. Legionnaires' disease is a severe form of pneumonia caused by the Legionella bacteria, which thrives in water systems such as cooling towers, hot tubs, and large plumbing networks. The bacteria spreads when people inhale contaminated water vapor or mist, but it is not transmitted from person to person.
In response to the cluster, the health department has been testing and disinfecting cooling towers in the area. Officials have urged residents, especially those over 50, smokers, and individuals with weakened immune systems, to seek medical attention if they develop symptoms like fever, cough, shortness of breath, or muscle aches. The first death in this cluster was reported earlier this month.
The city has not identified a single source of the outbreak, but environmental sampling continues. Health officials stress that the risk to the general public remains low, though they advise anyone with symptoms to contact a doctor promptly. The investigation remains active as authorities work to prevent further cases.
